London <- - End pub!> |
A team of scientists discovered the skull of a Gondwanatheria, a group of mammals that lived during the Late Cretaceous and that even when only the teeth are known, according to a study published in the journal “Nature” .
Investigators found the skull in a formation of Madagascar that dates back over 66 million years ago.
These animals lived on Gondwana, the ancient supercontinent that formed part of the by Pangea Laurasia, which coexisted with dinosaurs. This discovery provides a new insight into this enigmatic mammal called Vintana, so far only known for their teeth and with a certain resemblance to actual anteater.
The study of this new fossil indicates that this mammal was about great, good ear eyes and a great sense of smell, ie was an animal with well developed senses.
The discovery of the complete skull (except the jaw below) helps to better understand this Animal and details about their appearance and evolution in their relationships with the environment. The skull is 125 mm long and estimated that the mammalian body weighed about nine pounds.
