The astronaut Pedro Duque, graduated in engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and a member of the European Space Agency (ESA), will participate as a special assistant in the program of Pablo Motos, El Hormiguero 3.0, initiating collaborative “promote science and technology among young people.”
With the presence of Duke, will combine the playful aspect and its own entertainment program with experience UPM leader in Spain in training engineers, and ESA’s interest in attracting young talent, said the university in a statement.
This initiative is part of the program for the Promotion of Vocations Technology UPM performed with the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAI), to try to reverse the decline in the number of young people choosing these studies, 23% in the last decade.
These figures are compounded in the case of women, representing only 30% of engineering students, according to the Ministry of Education, but it is a problem that also affects other European countries such as Holland, France and Germany, adds.
Efforts to stimulate scientific, IT and technological interest among the young, are of particular interest now, when we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the European Cooperation in Space.
A graduate of the School of Aeronautical Engineering UPM, Pedro Duque returned to the university for courses between 2004 and 2006, having traveled to space twice.
His first space mission in 1998. STS-95 was the Space Shuttle Discovery and, five years later, Duke was in the International Space Station for ten days for the completion of the Cervantes mission.
