Venezuela occupies seventh position in world ranking of birds

Venezuela occupies the seventh position worldwide in more diversity bird, with at least 1417 species. So says the Center for Conservation and Biodiversity Monitoring the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Of the species described in the country, at least 50 are endemic, ie only exist and persist in the country. Of all the species, 6 have been introduced by humans and 34 are considered rare or accidental. The number of threatened birds could be around 150 species.

On the planet described about 10,000 species of birds, one of the best known groups and valued biodiversity, ranging from small hummingbirds to large ostriches. New species are still being discovered as far as explorations and scientific investigations delve into the most mega-diverse regions of the world, which seems to suggest that we are far from knowing the total number of these species yet.

The areas greater concentration of birds remain the tropics, particularly those with high levels of precipitation. The less abundant, usually are temperate or polar regions, or very dry. For its part, oceanic islands or individual ranges, they often have a high proportion of unique or endemic species, that is, that only exist worldwide in such places.

In the last evaluation of the Red List the World Conservation Union, the total species of birds, 1,313 are considered endangered (ie, in the categories of Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable), which represents around 13% of the total; 880 species are considered near threatened and four have been decreed extinct in the wild, giving a total of 2,193 species requiring urgent action to ensure their conservation.

The top ten diverse countries in birds occupy, in Descending, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Indonesia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, China, India and the Republic of Congo.
