GENEVA (Reuters) – The ozone layer that protects life on malignant sunlight is showing the first signs of recovery after years of dangerously low, according to a UN study, one of the few good news on the environment.

Experts said it was the work of a worldwide action: a ban in 1987 of some gases generated by humans damaging the layer. The agreement would help prevent thousands of cases of skin cancer and other disorders, they added.

The hole in the ozone layer that appeared over Antarctica has also continued to grow each year, but will spend a decade before begins to decline, the study, co-produced by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and United Nations Environment said.

“The international action on ozone is a great environmental success story … This should encourage us to show the same level of urgency and drive to tackle the even bigger challenge of climate change” said Secretary of WMO, Michel Jarraud.

Previous studies had suggested that the ozone layer had steadily deteriorated.

“Now for the first time in this report we say that we see evidence of small increases in total ozone. That supposed to have begun a recovery ozone in terms of total ozone, “the scientist said Geir Braathen WMO.
