Light particle accelerator after two years – El Nuevo Herald

The accelerator in the world’s largest particle has returned to action after two years of maintenance and improvements, the start of a new mission that scientists hope will allow them to glimpse the dark universe invisible.

Scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN for its French acronym) launched on Sunday two beams of particles through the tunnel 27 kilometers (16.8 miles) from the Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss border and France near Geneva.

“The activation is complete!” said CERN on your website.

The accelerator was instrumental in the discovery of the Higgs Boson a subatomic particle on whose existence had several theories in a while, but that was confirmed in 2013.

Scientists promise almost twice as much energy and violent clashes this time particles. They expect the most violent lightning shocks which could be launched in early June – permit observe the dark universe never seen before

Dark matter-and her cousin, energy dark- constitute the majority. the universe, but scientists have been unable to see them. Researchers seek them in high-energy shocks in special experiments on board the International Space Station and a deep underground mine.

The CERN invested about $ 150 million in improvements, opened the huge machine each 20 meters to check the status of the magnets and connections.
