Review: The good and bad of Apple iOS 9 – FORTUNE

There is already a new version of Apple’s operating system, the company launched its iOS 9 Wednesday.

The update was first announced in June and offers a number of new tools for iPad multitasking function, some underlying predictive features and performance enhancements.

Some of the best features are trapped in the Apple ecosystem and do not work with third-party applications, at least not yet. Fortunately, improvements to stability and as to make up the battery.

Here are nine new releases that you can try in the IOS 9:

Leave the charger at home (but do not go very far)

Apple said that in September will give iOS devices (even older) up to an hour on the battery.

The company has made application system more efficient in terms of energy, and has implemented minor adjustments, as illuminate the screen when notifications are received if the phone is face down.

In addition, a new option called Low Power makes it possible to have three hours of battery. When your battery down to 20% or 10%, giving you the option to switch to the Low Power mode. This pauses the background processes, reduces screen brightness, no checks for new mails so often and put to “sleep” faster.

If you really need more power, you can also find the biggest culprits in the new display battery settings, which tells you what is consuming the load.

Use the backspace button

Apple has added a button “return” in the upper left corner of the application. For example, if you open a link in Safari from Facebook, then you jump to your calendar for the notification of an event, you can now follow the crumbs to the first application you opened.

Get busy

Apple iPad really want to do a serious business tool. IOS 9 adds a few powerful multitasking features with existing iPads (although many do not work on older models).

Over Slide allows you to preview another application next to your screen. If you are reading a review of a movie on the new News app, you can search for movie times in Safari simultaneously.

To actually enter a multitasking function, Split View features two applications side by side, you can copy and paste. This is one step closer to capturing the work capabilities of a personal computer, but is not quite enough to convince me. As I write this, I have at least four different windows of notes, web pages and screenshots crammed into the 11-inch screen of my laptop.

Look at the video

My favorite addition is the iPad have a screen function into another. If you’re on a FaceTime call or you’re watching a video in a video application Apple, press the start button and the video will shrink to become a small floating window. No matter what other applications you use, the video will continue playing.

If only third-party applications can take advantage of this feature in the future, so you can get Hulu or Netflix open while working on a spreadsheet in Excel.

See if you understand Apple

One of the improvements most widely promoted in the IOS 9 is also the least satisfactory.

The operating system is you taking the time to meet you-your habits, likes and locations-to predict what information you need to ask before.

The functions of “proactive” support are presented in a variety of applications, including Mail, which suggests to recipients. It is most visible in Siri and the new search screen cluttered.

For now, the feature is a weak imitation of Google Now. In the best case, it tells you when to go to a meeting to find no traffic, but does not have access to all information that Google has.

Make Siri do new tricks

Siri now understands the context. If you are looking for Halloween costumes in Safari you can say “Siri, remind me to buy this tonight,” and remember the website. This only works in Apple applications like Mail, Safari and Messages.

The voice assistant can search for photos and videos (in the Apple Photos app). Ask Siri to show you selfies wine tasting last week and will do very well.

Give him another chance to Notes

Notes Apple has always been a utilitarian, simple embedded application. In the IOS 9 is catching up with third party applications like Evernote and OneNote.

There are more options and tools formatted drawings and photos. If you are in another application, you can save links and images directly in a note. It’s like a board of options that only lives in the Notes application.

Test Apple Maps (but do not forget the bus)

An application that is trying to renew is Apple Maps. It has come a long way since its launch in 2012 complicated, but I think that is still behind Google in terms of accuracy.

In the IOS 9 finally adds traffic signs. Interestingly I noticed that Apple Maps and Google Maps offer different routes and even tee times to address my house to work and Apple ignores the bus that is closer to my house.

Advance cautiously, but less than normal

I always recommend waiting until Apple releases its first update before installing a new iOS on your device. This gives the company time to resolve any possible initial failure.

It is known that the new versions of iOS make older devices become slow. We do not know if the iOS in September will follow the same pattern exasperating, but here are some reasons for optimism.

The update size is significantly smaller than normal. And the improvements to the aforementioned battery will be well received in older devices with a more limited power.

The iOS 9 was also released as a public beta version for the first time. In addition to regular developers, ordinary people have been testing the IOS 9 during months.

But if you decide to install it now in an older phone and want to have expected, version 9.1 will come with a new emoji to express your frustration.
