The huge airship Airlander 10 managed to take off for the first time – Clarín.com

A helium blimp considered the largest aircraft in the world flew for the first time yesterday in a brief but historic trip on an airstrip in central England. With engines roaring, the Airlander 10, of 92 meters long, slowly rose into the air from the track Cardington, 73 kilometers north of London.

Hybrid aerostat, helicopter and aircraft can remain airborne for days. In this case did a flyby of the area observed by hundreds of local residents -which parked their cars around the perimeter of aeropuerto– before landing a half hour later at sunset.

The Airlander is designed to use less fuel than a plane but can carry a heavier load than conventional aircraft. Its creator, Hybrid Air Vehicles, says that can reach 4,900 meters altitude, travel up to 148 kilometers per hour and stay aloft for up to two weeks.

” it’s a great British innovation, “executive director Stephen McGlennan said. “It is a combination of an aircraft having parts of a fixed-wing aircraft, helicopter and hot air balloon”, he said.
