anquilosauro dinosaur most comprehensive and oldest in Europe was found in the lignite mine of Santa María de Arino (Teruel). The remains of two partial skeletons of this dinosaur genus ‘armored’-by dermal plates covering them-, dubbed Europelta carbonensis have been presented at the Joint Foundation Teruel-Dinópolis Paleontology.

reservoir (AR-1) that were found are located in sediments Listen (Albian, Lower Cretaceous) formation with an age between 113 and 110 million years old and was excavated during 2010 and 2011, according to the foundation in a statement. The characteristics of these residues anquilosauro have been published in the scientific journal PLoS One open .

A new type of anquilosauro nodosaurid

The study of these two skeletons has allowed to define a new type of dinosaur anquilosauro nodosaurid Europelta carbonensis be called. It is the most complete found to date because it has recovered abundant both cranial and postcranial materials, from which it has been possible to accurately reconstruct the appearance of the animal.

anquilosauro measured five meters long and weighed around two tons

think dinosaur was about five meters long and its weight was around 2 tons . In addition, this nodosaurid found Arino is the oldest in Europe and one of the oldest in the world.

The nodosaurids (Nodosauridae) were sized dinosaurs, animals and herbivores -feed on herbaceous- dermal plates coated (osteoderms and ossicles). His legs were strong and, unlike the anquilosáuridos (Ankylosauridae), the ossified tendons nodosaurids had no tail nor mace at its end.

Apart from the two individuals studied has recovered and is awaiting another copy of paleontological preparation anquilosauro. Another individual-yet-unexcavated is on the site itself

The new finding complements the results obtained during the last three years of intensive paleontological excavation and preparation, along with a painstaking scientific study, will more accurately reconstruct the ecosystem of the area during the Albian (Lower Cretaceous).

The study that has been presented is a work of a team of paleontologists from the Foundation Set-Dinópolis Teruel Paleontology (Aragonés Museum of Paleontology), Utah Geological Survey (U.S..) and the Museum of Natural History of Utah (USA)., James I. Kirkland, Luis Alcalá, Mark A. Loewen, Espílez Eduardo, Luis Mampel and Jelle P. Wiersma.

Cooperation in Mine Arino

Joint Paleontology Foundation Teruel-Dinópolis leads a cooperative project between mining and palaeontological research applied that has resulted in the discovery in the town of Arino a spectacular site with more than 100 concentrations of Mesozoic vertebrates in an area of ??over 25 hectares and has provided more than 6,000 fossil bones.

The paleontological work carried out in the lignite mine Santa Maria open since 2010 thanks to the collaboration of SAMCA Group.
