MADRID. A team of scientists identified a molecule capable of preventing the effects of abusive and intensive consumption of alcohol has on the brain.
The effect of the molecule, called OAS (oleoylethanolamide) was tested in rats and researchers were able to reduce neuroinflammation and toxic effects that alcohol intake in the brain.
The head of this work is Laura Orio , from the Complutense University of Madrid, told Efe that elevated blood alcohol levels produced by intensive intake causes a negative impact on the brain because it is given an uncontrolled immune and inflammatory response that causes more brain toxicity, which affects, among other areas, to the cerebral cortex.
The molecule used in this study was discovered in 2001 by another team of Spanish researchers, who found her in the black chocolate and also in the human body, where it is generated naturally. It is released from the intestine and travels to the brain
So far This molecule was studied in relation to appetite (controls).
For this study, native and his team administered to animal models alcohol and said molecule at a time and found that the latter is able exacerbated reduce neuroinflammation. “We find that this compound (OAS) has anti-inflammatory properties against brain damage,” according to the scientist.
As to whether serve to cushion the surf, native has reported that this study has not been proven that although “it is not unreasonable” to think that might have some effect, as previous studies have found that could act against the anhedonia (negative emotional state).
The next step will be to test this preventive effect brain damage in humans, for which it has already started to recruit students from the UCM, has detailed this research.
If research continues its course and the results are good, “in the future may get a good drug therapy to treat any kind of alcohol abuse. “
