Robots invade hotels – El Diario de Yucatan

SAN FRANCISCO (EFE) .- it is called Relay and is the latest addition to several hotels in Silicon Valley, using the little robot to deliver food, toothpaste, towels and other objects in the rooms of customers.

“We have deployed our Aloft Cupertino Hotel in Silicon Valley Aloft, Milpitas Crown Plaza and Holiday Inn Express Redwood City robots,” says Adrian Grey, co-founder of Savioke, company developed the machine, compact structure and 90 centimeters high.

Grey explains that the “strong point” Relay is its ability to “navigate in complex environments.” That is, it is able to circulate in the hotel lobby, up the elevator and walk down the aisles without bumping into customers, luggage or other objects. The “work” Relay begins when a customer calls the front desk to request a room service. At that time, the clerk opens the compartment located on the front of the robot, place the items requested by the customer types the number of the room.

Relay which activates the elevator button remotely calls to your room when you arrive at your destination. Its back cover is opened immediately after the host opens the door of the room.

After completing the work, Relay asks the client if he is happy with their service with a message on the back screen opens closes the “eyes” and performs a little dance with electronic sounds when the guest presses the button five stars to express your satisfaction.

The robots, which debuted in the hotel less than a year ago have made and 5,000 deliveries and traveled more than 1,000 kilometers.

Grey and his team spent much time thinking about design. “We assume that when a guest opens the door has never seen a robot and spent a lot of time making sure those first moments were pleasant and that customers know how to use the robot,” he says.

They chose intentionally Relay not turn into a humanoid. “When a robot looks like a person one expects more from him. We tend to think that is very intelligent and can talk and do many things, “he says.

” We designed a friendly robot, with friendly presence, and include eyes to let people know that he is aware of the environment around you, but do not create false expectations. “

The room service can take up to half an hour, which can be halved when Relay is used. “This means that customers are happier and do better reviews hotels guests, which is very important.”

At the forefront of “service robot” is the Henn-na hotel, which opened its doors in July in the Japanese city of Nagasaki and has several robots at the reception, including the appearance of a dinosaur.

The Japanese hotel also has a robotic vehicle to transport luggage, a bell -Robot that can provide basic information such as the breakfast menu and room doors that open by facial scan.
