NASA discovers 1,284 new planets – Diez.hn

The American Space Agency (NASA) announced the discovery of 1,284 new planets thanks to a new technique for analyzing data from Kepler telescope , the biggest announcement of exoplanets in one day to date.

“This announcement doubles the number of confirmed by Kepler planets” , announced at a press conference Ellen Stofan, chief scientist at NASA headquarters in Washington.

Nine of confirmed planets orbiting a star in the habitable zone, so that would be candidates for liquid water and therefore life.

with the addition of these nine planets, the number of candidates to be habitable discovered thanks to the Kepler space telescope, which operated until 2013, amounts to 21.

About 550 could be rocky planets like Earth, taking into account its size.

the data collected by the telescope Kepler possible to analyze the spectrum of over 150,000 stars and detect slight brightness variations, indicating the passage of a planet’s orbit of the sun.

the new technique has speeded up exponentially findings planets was developed by scientists Princeton University (USA), which, through an open and software algorithms have managed to automate detections.

the system classifies those variations in stellar brightness that allow advance the existence of potential planets.

the technique has identified 4,300 potential planets, but 1,327 of them, despite probably be planets, do not reach the 99% certainty that mark the scientists to confirm the fact.

in addition, 707 have been classified as other astronomical phenomenon and 984 candidate planets that had not previously been identified have been confirmed with new techniques.
