Observed magnetic reconnection between Earth and the Sun – ElTiempo.com

The MMS NASA mission accomplished for the first time, observe the reconnection of magnetic fields of the Earth and the Sun, which is a major step in understanding the weather in space and has fundamental implications in fields such as magnetism and solar physics.

magnetic reconnection occurs when two lines of opposing camps break and connect with each other, releasing large amounts of energy.

a study published by Science describes the first direct observation of the phenomenon occurred in the nuclei of galaxies and causing visible explosions billions of light years.

in the Sun causes solar flares so powerful that amount to half a million atomic bombs, and on Earth brings energy to magnetic storms and auroras.

However, scientists have not explained how the simple act of crisscrossing lines magnetic fields causes such violent explosions, says NASA on its website popular science, which points out that “magnetic reconnection could be the favorite way for the universe to blow up things.”

NASA launched the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS), a mission system last year to study the interaction of the magnetic field of the Earth with other celestial bodies, consisting of four ships flying through the magnetic field our planet to study reconnection in action. And now they have been able to observe how this explosive physical process converts the stored magnetic energy into kinetic energy and heat.

A team of experts, composed among others by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and the University of Maryland, studied data from the MMS, and their findings have “significant implications” for space, solar physics, astrophysics and physics of critical plasma, said a statement.

“with MMS, a new ‘microscope’ has opened a new window to see clearly the reconnection” , said the vice president of Engineering and Space Science Swei and principal investigator mission, James L. Burch.
