Barcelona (ACN) .- The electric eel ( Electric eel ) is not only one of the creatures that produce shock more strong but is also the first animal capable of using electricity as a remote to direct the movements of their dams and easy capture , explains this week an international team of researchers in an article published in the journal Science .
Scientists have long known that the electric eel can produce discharges of up to 600 volts and that this singular animal can issue various types of discharges, distinguishing use as guidance in water or as a method of hunting. The novelty of the research presented this week is that the team led by Kenneth Catania of Vanderbilt University in Nashville (USA) has shown that Electric eel can deliver a high voltage shock “trigger massive muscle contractions involuntary prey fish that prevent their escape movements “, as highlighted Science.
Catania experiments show that this specific type of shock affecting motor neurons that control muscles of fish controlling or kidnapping their movements remotely, mimicking the electrical impulses of neurons from their own, and that normally serve the fish to stimulate muscle movement and escape predators.
The scientific paper published in Science is accompanied by several videos with slow motion pictures in which it is seen as some dams are immobilized or are at a proper angle to the electric eels to fish. In one experiment (attached video), electric shocks produce a light red to facilitate interpretation of the action of eels.
