Neanderthals bird claws used to make jewelry ago … – Pulzo

Krapina Neanderthals (Croatia) have manipulated clutches of white-tailed eagle, before the appearance of modern humans in Europe.

This is the main conclusion of a study published in the journal Plos One, conducted by a team of researchers from the US and Croatia, in which the authors describe eight claws, in its full majority of this species, which sheds new light on the cognitive abilities of Neanderthals.

The fossil remains were discovered more than a hundred years ago and all derived from a single period.

According to the authors of this study, four claw marks show several cutting edges smoothed and all facets of rubbing and abrasion. In addition, three of them have small indentations on the surface, about the same place.

This suggests that they may be part of a set of jewelry, -the claws used as a necklace or bracelet.

The magazine recalled in a note, some researchers have argued that Neanderthals lacked symbolic abilities or could copy this behavior of modern men.

However, the presence these claws suggests that Neanderthals of Krapina should use them to some kind of symbolic purpose (with intentional manipulation): “It is an amazing discovery,” said David Frayer, University of Kansas (USA) and a signatory of this work.

“It’s one of those things that suddenly appear. It is unexpected and surprising because we did not find anything like-this type of jewels until recently,” said the researcher.
