A team of US researchers and Croatia found that Krapina Neanderthals (Croatia) may have manipulated clutches of white-tailed eagle, a bird of prey, 130,000 years to make jewelry ago, before the appearance of modern humans in Europe.
This is the main conclusion of a study published in the scientific journal “ Plos One “, in which the authors describe eight claws, in its most complete of this species, and throws new light on the cognitive abilities of Neanderthals.
The remains fossil were discovered more than a hundred years ago and all derived from a single period.
According to the authors of this study, four claw marks show several cutting edges smoothed and all facets of rubbing and abrasion. In addition, three of them have small indentations on the surface, about the same place .
This suggests that they may be part of a set of jewelry, -the claws used as a necklace or bracelet.
The magazine recalled in a note, that some researchers have argued that Neanderthals lacked symbolic abilities or could copy this behavior of modern men.
However, the presence of these claws suggests that Neanderthals of Krapina should use for some type of symbolic purpose (with intentional manipulation): “This is a stunning discovery,” said David Frayer, University of Kansas (USA) and one of the signers of this work
