Twitter, Inc (NYSE: TWTR). has been officially blocked China. The social platform estimates has about 10 million active users in China.
Twitter has been looking to grow its global user base, and the prohibition of service in China has seriously hampered this goal. The news came after the appointment of Bret Taylor as board members of Twitter that had previously been serving as its director Facebook technology.
It was previously estimated that Twitter had about 35.5 million users in China, but the real figure is much lower than that. According to an anonymous source Twitter who spoke with TechCrunch, there are 10 million users of the service in China.
The estimates made by the giant social networks are based on the number of users using Twitter through VPN, it is allowing them to avoid the firewall that the country has to prohibit such social sites.
in addition to Twitter, China has also blocked popular websites like Google, Facebook, Blogger and WordPress in the country. One of the most recent addition to the list of censored websites in the country is Medium, which was banned in April most likely related to the scandal of Panama documents.
