The first Indian mission to Mars successfully leaves Earth orbit - Reuters

MADRID, 1 December (IRIN) –

The first mission to Mars India successfully left Earth orbit and now heads to the Red Planet. With this step the India Space Research Organization (ISRO) demonstrates the technological potential of the country, and it is one of the most delicate phases of a space launch.

“The trans-Mars injection has been completed successfully,” ISRO has reported on its website. The Mangalyaan spacecraft, which cost just $ 72 million, was launched on Nov. 5, from the launch pad Srihanikota. Its aim is to study the mineral composition of the planet’s surface and look methane gas in the Martian atmosphere.

However, experts have recognized that science in this project is really a secondary objective. What I really want to prove this mission is to develop the capacity of India in space, so that the technological objectives are the main drivers.

If everything continues on schedule line, India will become the fourth country to study closely with Mars spacecraft, after the Soviet Union, the United States and the European Space Agency (ESA). China and Japan tried but unfortunately failed in their attempt. Indeed, the Chinese Mars probe disintegrated to leave Earth orbit, burning in the atmosphere.
