An accident leaves Mexico without satellite – El Diario de Yucatan

The Centennial Mexican communications satellite disintegrated in the atmosphere yesterday hours after launch from Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, she reported the Russian space agency, Roscosmos.

Centennial, which was to provide telecommunications services to Mexico and much of Latin America, could not be separated from the third stage of the Proton-M carrier rocket, which exploded.

Llaca Fernando de la Peña, president of the Mexican Space Agency, said it was a mistake to hire the Russian company, by having a history of accidents, and that the accident left unprotected to Mexico in intelligence functions and national security.
