A major glacier in northeast Greenland is unraveling rapidly in the Atlantic Ocean , experts warned Thursday, according to whom the melting of this block Ice rise half a meter the sea level. The glacier, known as Zachariae Isstrom, “entered a phase of rapid melting in 2012,” when the rate of smelting tripled.
Now lose mass at a rate of 5,000 million tons per year , said the study published in the journal Science.
“The shape and dynamics Zachariae Isstrom has changed dramatically in recent years,” said lead author study, Jeremie Mouginot, research assistant in the department of geophysics at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).
The glacier is pouring “huge amounts of icebergs into the ocean , which the merge will result in raising the sea level in the coming decades, “he added.
The finding was based on 40 years of satellite data from space agencies as well as the Air control the shape, size and position of the glacier over time.
The warm ocean water is eroding the glacier from below , and increased temperature air above it is melting.
“The surface of the glacier is melting as a result of decades of continuous increase in air temperature, while bottom is compromised by warm water currents “said Eric Rignot, lead author of the study and professor of geophysics at the ICU.
This study is reported two weeks of the international climate conference in Paris (cop21), where an agreement will seek to limit emissions of gases with greenhouse effect potentially catastrophic for the planet.
