MEXICO CITY, 11/10 / Cup 2014 (The People’s Daily Online) – A team of scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, studied the zigzag movements of a snake and discovered why dunes can rise and fall smoothly. So far this ability, known as sidewinding, had not been implemented in robots.
-inspired approach to building robots in biology-has yielded great results, the study’s authors say, obtaining new ways to move , which include run fast, slide, fly, or walk in the sand.
“Mobility without limbs, like snakes, are excellent study systems for achieving robots that move in all kinds of land. these animals can move fast on land and water, get under the surface, difficult climbing areas and even glide through the air, “they said.
The study, published in the latest edition of the Science explains how a special kind of snake is able to increase the area of your body that comes in contact with the sand to keep it from falling apart.
According to these observations, the scientists found that snakes in contact with an inclined and unstable such as sand surface elevations, increased the length of his body, according to the inclination of the surface, they did so to a greater or lesser extent.
“The serpent rises some segments of the body while holding other on the floor, and as the slope inclines more, your body is flattened, “said Howie Choset, a professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon.
To determine the movement patterns, the team investigated the robot snakes and sand in a circular enclosure. In this area, built at Zoo Atlanta, placed six types of snakes that use this movement to see how they climbed the mounds of sand at different inclinations.
They calculated how far penetrated the sand, how many points contact is established between the body and the surface, and how this behavior changed depending on the type of slope.
