Fungus filaments oldest known fossil – El Diario de Yucatan

LONDON (Notimex) .- The oldest known to date terrestrial fossil is 440 million years and belongs to a fungus, confirmed researchers from the universities of Cambridge and Durham in the UK.

this is Tortotubus filaments of the fungus, discovered 30 years ago in Gotland, an island in Sweden where they sought fossils, reported Tuesday the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society.

Martin Smith, University of Durham, said that Tortotubus probably helped the consolidation of the first floors of the planet, allowing its expansion.

Also disintegrated organic matter for nutrients were used by others, in a sort of early soil fertilization, allowing the appearance of the first plants, he said.

the filaments found on the Swedish island allowed the fungus nutrient absorption and energy, said the scientist .

the paleontologist clarified that the Tortotubus is unlikely to have been the first organism on Earth, although the fossil oldest known.

there is a lack of direct evidence, but it is very likely that in its initial stages the Earth has harbored very simple life forms such as bacteria, algae or lichens, all less complex than Tortotubus
