A new spyware for iPhone, for journalists – Expansion MX

SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney) –

One of the most important tricks that exist to penetrate an iPhone was unveiled through a simple text message

A. security researchers announced Thursday August 25 they had discovered a new malware iPhone that serves for attackers to see virtually everything that happens on your iPhone. They tracked the software Spy to an Israeli company called NSO Group. NSO publicly sold software which, according to them, can trace the mobile phone of a person … and many of their clients are governments.

At the same time, Apple released an update for iOS 9.3 .5 in which these vulnerabilities are repaired. The company recommends that anyone using an iPhone immediately update your operating system. Users with the beta version of IOS 10 may also repair the weaknesses with the latest version.

The researchers noted that to seem some governments have used the software NSO to spy on journalists and human rights workers. They used false domains to try to disguise themselves as legitimate groups like the Red Cross, news organizations and large technology companies.

Ahmed Mansoor, an activist for human rights, received a text message suspicious on August 10. The next day he received another containing a link providing information on detainees was promised in prisons in the United Arab Emirates. As this is not the first time they try hack , the dissident known forwarded messages to a researcher at the Citizen Lab Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, Canada.

The Citizen Lab allied with Lookout mobile security company to investigate. Together they confirmed that they had discovered a spyware advanced that took advantage of three previously unknown security flaws in the IOS. If you had clicked on the link, Mansoor have installed inadvertently malware that would have served to whoever sent it had full access to their communications.

The combination of vulnerabilities that known as Trident , allows the attacker has access to the camera, microphone and location of the iPhone. You can intercept messages and emails, download the calendar and contact information and see the passwords stored on the iPhone. Can you record phone calls and messages of WhatsApp and Viber, besides having access to communication applications such as iMessage, Gmail, Facebook, Skype and Line.

“We were informed of this vulnerability and repair immediately with iOS 9.3.5. We recommend all our customers who always download the latest version of iOS to protect against any potential security threat, “said Fred Sainz, a spokesman for Apple, said in a statement.

NSO Group denied knowledge of this particular trick.

“the company only sells to government agencies authorized and fully with the strict laws and regulations export control meets” Zamir Dahbash spokesman said NSO said in a statement. “The contracts signed with customers of the company requires that the company’s products are used legally. Specifically, the products can only be used to prevent and investigate crimes.”
