NASA postpones launch next Mars mission – The Universal

The US space agency NASA , said Wednesday it will postpone the release of its next mission to Mars , originally scheduled for March 2016, having found small leaks in the field of vacuum containing the seismic instrument of the ship.

Although the agency did not specify a new launch date, it will not be until at least two years later than planned, ie, in 2018, because of the relative orbits of Mars and Earth .

“We’re out of time,” he acknowledged Tuesday in a conference call about the mission InSight directory associate administrator of NASA scientist John M. Grunsfeld.

The decision to postpone the launch was taken after the Monday to conduct a stress test which the ship underwent less than 45 degrees celsius and leakage were observed.

The aim of the InSight mission is to measure earthquakes of Mars to help astronomers understand the tremors and interior the red planet, as most information that he has today corresponds to the surface.

Because Mars is farther from the sun than Earth, its orbital motion is more long, so the blue and red planets will no longer line up until after 26 months, that is, in May 2018, date by which could set the new release.
