Competition Commissioner EU look closely Google’s Android – Investing.com Spain

By Foo Yun Chee

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – The head of competition issues in the European Union, which has already accused Google (NASDAQ :) of facilitate Internet searches to your own shopping service, he said on Monday it was now reviewing its agreements with manufacturers and mobile operators.

The statements of the European Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, occur after a yearlong investigation on Android, the most popular operating system for smart phones in the world, at the request of two complaints.

A decision on Google shopping service could be announced this year. As in the case of Android, it could lead to a fine of up to 7,400 million dollars or 10 percent of Google’s revenue in 2015 and forcing the giant Internet search to change their business practices.

Vestager said large companies should not try to protect themselves holding back innovation.

“So we are looking closely at Google contracts with handset manufacturers and operators using the Android operating system,” he told a conference organized by the Dutch Competition Authority.

“Our concern is that, by requiring phone makers and operators to preload a set of applications Google, rather than let them decide for themselves what applications load, Google could have cut one of the main ways in which new applications can reach customers, “Vestager said.

The Commission said last year that it was also investigating whether Google had prevented manufacturers of smartphones and tablets to develop and market versions of Android modified that could have created competition.

Other concern was that Google had hampered development and market access applications and rival services to package applications and distributed on Android devices with other Google products services illegally.
