Spain suspended in Computer Science – CCM

A report has revealed that in Spain society knows little or nothing about computer science.

CCM – The “Education in Computer Science in Spain” report by Google, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and Everis has indicated that Spaniards have “widespread ignorance” about what are the Computer Science (CC) : 82% of parents and 76% of students aged 12 to 16 do not know what materials are included in this sector or confused with other terms.

The use of digital devices for programming in the classroom is almost nonexistent: they had only 5% of pupils in primary and 16% secondary. Another example: only 24% of young people interviewed knew that Scratch was a programming tool. The study authors believe that teaching computer science in schools is essential to avoid a “digital future shortage of talent” . And it is that Spain is still far behind its European neighbors in technological education.

Therefore, the report makes several recommendations as to encourage the introduction of Computer Science in the educational program, create opportunities for collaboration between professionals, parents, students and teachers, and finally, try to break the gender gap because, the authors emphasize, girls continue to choose computer studies a much lesser extent than boys.
