Wikipedia, Princess of Asturias International Cooperation – La Prensa Grafica

The popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia was recognized Wednesday with the Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation.

The jury praised the “democratic, open and participatory” method used by Wikipedia to bring universal knowledge to people around the world. Founded by American entrepreneur Jimmy Wales in 2001, Wikipedia is a free access digital encyclopedia with entries in many written by volunteers around the world languages.

His articles can be edited by registered users. Wikipedia is among the 10 most visited Internet sites, said the jury. The International Cooperation is the seventh of eight awards Princess of Asturias to be granted.

The French economist Esther Duflo was awarded in social sciences, the filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, in the category of Arts and philosopher Spanish Emilio Lledó took the Communication and Humanities.

In addition, biochemical Emmanuelle Charpentier, France, and Jennifer Doudna, USA, received the award for Scientific Research and brothers Pau and Marc Gasol, the Sports.

The Cuban writer and journalist Leonardo Padura collect the Letters. It is the first time in the 35 year history of the event that the name Princess of Asturias is used. The abdication of King Juan Carlos last year left the crown in the hands of Philip VI.

The title of Princess of Asturias became Leonor, 9, eldest daughter of Felipe and Letizia kings and current heir . Each of the awards, created in 1981, is worth 50,000 euros ($ 56,150) and a sculpture designed by the artist Joan Miró. The awards will be presented in October in Oviedo.
