‘Star Wars Battlefront “takes you to a galaxy far away – FORTUNE

(CNN) – – “Who are you?” – “I am nobody.”

Those words started the latest wave of excitement, anticipation and intrigue when the official trailer of Star Wars Episode VII: Rise of the Force traveled the globe recently. In it we see new characters, old favorites and the continuation of a story that has captivated audiences for many, many years.

The film mixes nostalgia with promise of something new. Lucasfilm and game developer EA Digital Illusions CE wanted to capture those emotions in a videogame and worked for three years in an unprecedented collaboration to create Star Wars Battlefront.

“This is as deeply as we open our files to any partner, “said Ada Duan, Vice President of Lucasfilm Digital Business and Franchise Management.

“We wanted to honor the memory of the films”

The team at Digital Illusions (DICE called) wanted to create a game that all Star Wars fans have dreamed. To make it a reality, artists, designers and developers traveled to Cultural Arts Museum Lucas at Skywalker Ranch near San Francisco and were allowed access to the props, costumes and art created for the original trilogy of Star Wars films.

“We wanted to honor the memory of the films,” said Sigurlina Ingvarsdóttir, senior producer of Star Wars Battlefront. “Our partners were invited to Lucasfilm Skywalker Ranch for walking and delve into the atmosphere. But then (we were allowed) to enter the files and actually see the props and decrypt to where we could use. ”

The team says took many photographs and measurements, plus depth looked through the archives to study each piece so it could be displayed perfectly in the game as they did in the movie. However, Ingvarsdóttir realized that it’s more about the perception of fanatics on historical accuracy.

“The films were captured on video in the late 70s and early 80s,” he said. “Much has happened in terms of bringing visual, but I think when you see, that’s how you see the movie in your mind.”

The artistic team also traveled to Iceland and Muir Woods, California to take inspiration to recreate the environments of some of the planets in the game.

DICE and Lucasfilm knew they would have to work side by side to bring to life the original trilogy in a video game so that the fans will appreciate it and wish.

“They could take lots of pictures and use them as real references as the most authentic representation of that utility, either for weapons or to a planet,” Duan said, adding that even the original art reference was available. “In truth we open wide our files, not only reference to the original films but also much material we have available here.”

The game takes players through many adventures of Episode IV: A New Hope on Tatooine, Episode V: The Empire Strikes on Hoth and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi in Endor. Although several missions were taken directly from the scripts, there are others who use the films as a backdrop to create challenges the rebels or stormtroopers.

But the story does not end after the explosion of the second Death Star. The game also travels previously undiscovered planets, as Sullist a lava planet. Sullist is not something dreamed designers, is mentioned but never seen in Return of the Jedi .

It also relates directly to the next installment, The Awakening Force to let players enter the battle Jakku from December 1. This planet desert was the battleground for a fierce conflict between the New Republic and the Empire 29 years before the events in the film.

“It has definitely been part of our strategy from the outset, because 10 years have passed since the last Star Wars movie was on the screens,” Duan said. “As a result, we know that there will be a new audience that will see Star Wars in theaters first. Part of the strategy was truly engage or re-engage fans of the series in the excitement of the film (through the video game) “.

Ingvarsdóttir and his team, all fans of Star Wars, the pressure will be recognized by the fans, who know intimately the details of the films. It was a challenge that she and the developers agreed, but were also aware of its limitations.

“It’s a mixture of excitement and incredible privilege, combined with a sense of pressure and responsibility,” he said. “The fans come in all shapes and with many opinions. They care so much. We are fans of Star Wars too, so we care equally. But obviously, we have to make the game we want to do, and does not include everything that everyone wants. ”

Lucasfilm and DICE believe they have created a game that is true to the history of the original trilogy but is visually precise and unbelievable in its presentation. Duan said the short development time actually incited groups metieran everything they wanted.

Ingvarsdóttir believed that both fans and players will appreciate the breadth of spirit that led the two teams to play.

“You are fighting against your friends; dogfight in the sky; You’re flying over a canyon in an X-Wing in a pitched battle, “he said. “I think people really appreciate the different types of scenarios that we have created and can see whether they are playing by themselves or screen sharing with a friend sitting on the couch, or in our big battles.”

The game was released last week, it works for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.

Lucasfilm and DICE can not wait to walk the players through the galaxy.

“This is the year of Star Wars, and I think the whole world is extremely excited about what’s going to happen,” said Ingvarsdóttir. “We can see that our fans are eagerly awaiting our game. Obviously, everyone is looking forward to The awakening of force . I do not think there has been a better time to be a fan of Star Wars now. ”
