Facebook prohibits advertising or selling weapons – Digital Journal Juarez

San Francisco – Facebook today announced a new policy that prohibits individuals from advertising or selling firearms in the world’s largest social network

The new policy also. Instagram applies to subsidiary Facebook. Groups in favor of gun control had long complained that Facebook and other Web sites are often used by unlicensed sellers and buyers who are not eligible to legally buy firearms.

Facebook “unfortunate and unconsciously worked as an online platform for people to acquire dangerous weapons,” said Shannon Watts, Everytown for Gun Safety, a group that launched a public campaign to convince the social network to change its policies two years ago.

Watts said his group has found numerous cases where offenders and minors were able to buy firearms on the site, including two cases where the buyers used the weapons to kill. Representatives of two groups that defend the rights of purchase and possession of weapons, including the National Rifle Association, did not respond in time to requests for comment.

Facebook had announced some restrictions on the sale and advertisement weapons in 2014, saying it would prevent minors can see publications that promote weapons. But the network did not prohibit private sales at the time.
