Maven and Mangalyaan: Probes will meet this week … – latercera

Maven (Mars Atmosphere Volatile Evolution an) NASA probe successfully reached Mars orbit last night , after successfully completing the braking process with its six thrusters, operation performed for 33 minutes.

After ten months of travel, Maven will now start collecting more accurate data about the composition of the Martian atmosphere, analysis that will be useful to prepare in future manned mission the red planet.

As this happened, the Indian probe Mangalyaan , which was released on November 5, reached the “vicinity” of the red planet, according to the space agency reported the country.

“Calculations show that our browser Orbital Mission Mars has entered the sphere of gravitational influence of Mars,” Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) wrote in his Twitter account.

Mangalyaan -Vehicle of Mars, 1,350 kilos, is scheduled to reach Mars first local time on Wednesday 24 September, after traveling 400 million miles in 300 days .

India has become this mission in the sixth country to try to reach Mars, a goal they have only managed to successfully United States, Russia and the European Union.

The Japanese attempt in 2003 and China in 2011 ended with individual failures, so that India could become the first Asian country to reach the Red Planet.

Once in Mars orbit, the satellite will study the surface topography and the planet’s atmosphere and will focus on the search for methane, one of the indicators of the existence of life.
