‘Philae’ Goes to sleep after successfully sending the first batch of … – The New Spain

“Philae” ESA probe fell yesterday in “sleep mode” for a potentially long silence, after exhausting their batteries and not having enough sunlight to recharge. In this mode, all instruments and most onboard systems are closed.

“before falling silent, the lander has been able to convey all the scientific data collected in the first sequence of scientific activity,” said Stephan Ulamec, head of ESA’s landing in Germany. “Philae” managed to pierce the floor of the comet with his hole and placed a thermometer in the comet’s surface.

“This machine works great in difficult conditions and we can be proud of the amazing scientific success ‘Philae’ represents,” he added. Contact was lost yesterday to the one in the morning, not long before the loss of scheduled communication that have happened to drop the “Rosetta” probe below the horizon.

As of now the contact is not possible, unless enough sunlight reaches the solar panels to generate the energy to wake the module. It is now turning the main body of the lander, as the solar panels “Philae” are fixed.
