Spain will investigate data sharing on social networks – The Universe

The Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) will investigate if the program announced last week to exchange personal data of the users between WhatsApp and Facebook complies with the Spanish law of privacy.

The agency will review what information is collected by the messaging service WhatsApp, among its users, is sent to Facebook, for what purpose, how long it is kept, and what options are offered to users who wish to oppose, according to a statement released Saturday.

The AEPD stated that he would work in coordination with their counterparts in Germany, Italy and Great Britain, both of which have announced research similar.

Facebook bought the platform WhatsApp two years ago and announced, in August last, that the service would begin sharing user data with the social network within a plan to synchronize the two businesses on-line.

According to statements of the managers of Facebook, in its official website, the data that will be shared will be the phone number that is used to log in to the messaging service. Also, information such as the last time you used the service, the numbers of senders and recipients, sending and receiving time of each message and even the place where the message is sent. Data of this type are called metadata, that is information about the communication that does not include its contents.

Before this, Edward Snowden said, in an interview to an american channel, that the metadata may not be intimate, but personal because you already know where you have been, how long she was there, with whom you spoke, and this will take you to what he said. (I)
