  • second day of Google IO I had the opportunity, finally, to test Google Goggles. In the promotional videos of the company, Glass is a screen almost permanently superimposed field of vision. The reality is somewhat different, but no less interesting. Once adjusted, these glasses “magic” cast a small screen a few centimeters of the right eye.

have to look away to the top left corner of the field of view and focus the light on it to distinguish the graphics and text displays. not complicated but not completely natural . It takes effort and you have to get used to. The glasses have to be well adjusted to easily see all four corners but otherwise, this screen is not particularly intrusive. In bright environments can be difficult to read text or icons showing.

When Glass does not have any message or photo to show, the screen just goes off. A light touch on the side or a nod specific (lift our eyes and put his head back) just to turn it on.

Glass is primarily a second screen for mobile phone and remains linked to it via a wireless connection. The operating system consists of a series of “cards” from which you can navigate by sliding your finger on the arm of the glasses. These cards show warnings and messages, but also videos and photos captured with the camera of five megapixels.

    addition

touch control system on pin-which also includes a button to record video or take photos, ‘Glass can be controlled by voice. The voice recognition works on the device (no Internet connection required) and I had no trouble order to take a photo and engraven a video . The videos, unless otherwise specified, are 10 seconds long and was recorded with sound. Glass does not have traditional headphones, but generates sound-mono-vibrating on the skull. Not a very powerful sound in any case.

    To save battery

glasses these videos do not rise to the network automatically. You have to ask specifically that share (in the Google+ social network) or wait for the glasses are connected to the current-loaded via a microUSB port, and a wireless WiFi network available. Then all content is automatically synchronized in the network. Google says that the autonomy of the device is one day but several developers with whom I have spoken on this Google Io me that it is common to recharge once or twice daily, depending on use.

    Overall

get used to navigating through menus and learn to take pictures takes a few minutes. Is it a good product? It is still early to say. The version that has been distributed to thousands of developers and we could try at Google IO is a prototype, not the yu still missing some shots: If you are placed on the head are uncomfortable to wear (they can not collapse like ordinary glasses) must be properly adjusted the screen to see it properly, the functionality is still limited, if you wear glasses you have to put these currents over, etc, etc, etc …

But the idea that Google is selling this product is interesting, but ultimately ends up being even more elegantly executed by other designs or products. We spend too much time pending the phone screen, even when often only need a brief look at the last message or a short text explaining a story and there are many applications that could benefit from a more concise format, such as maps or navigation and access local information and local shops.

At the current price ($ 1,500) is a very expensive treat for the end user but more likely is that the business model is much more economical and by then there will be new applications that may fit better with the way which access information.

is still much to the vision of that first video that Google released over a year ago, but Glass, although progress slowly, it is in the right direction.
