Goodbye shell

After sending indications that it would come with a new camera, GoPro has finally announced two new models: the Hero5 Black (US$ 399) and the Hero5 Session ($ 299). The first is a full update, while the latter is an improved version of the original, but without some of the key features of the Black. Now, choose the one facing to the other easier than in the past. Both will be available on the 2nd of October.

During the same event in California, GoPro also announced the arrival of its drone GoPro Karma, of US$ 799.

Both of these cameras are water resistant up to 10 meters (33 feet) without a cover. The cameras of GoPro earlier were only robust and resistant to water when they were inside a housing particular of polycarbonate, and dealing with them was a hassle. It is assumed that there will be housing diving for those who want to dive even more or in need of protection against blows, but out of the box you can already use them in the sand or if you do surf.

GoPro has also introduced what is called electronic image stabilization (EIS, for its acronym in English) of professional quality. It is disappointing that it was not able to integrate the optical image stabilization for the Hero5 as Sony did with its camera more recent, but at least it offers EIS. I’m not sure if that comes at the expense of the quality or the resolution of the image, however. And speaking of resolution…

4K Video in both

The Black and the Session will be able to record in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. That is the same capacity as the Hero4 Black, but a leap for the Session. The Hero5 Black also receives other improvements of image, however.

The camera can capture photos in 12 megapixel camera in RAW format and there is also a mode wide dynamic range. GoPro also added an environment of lineal vision that corrects for the distortion in your photos and videos with wide-angle. The Session of a 10-megapixel camera has this option also, but it doesn’t seem to have the capture raw (RAW) mode and the WDR.

quick Controls

GoPro left the control configuration of three buttons for the Hero5 Black in favor of a touch screen of 2 inches and a single button that turns the camera on and starts recording. The touch interface has been updated, also, to streamline things a bit for you do not end up doing things without rhyme or reason.

Connected and convenient

At the beginning of the year, the chairman and ceo of GoPro, Nick Woodman, said that the Hero5 would be the camera “more connected and more convenient” that GoPro has ever done and that any new hardware would do a better job to connect with the phones and the cloud.

Here is where it comes GoPro Plus, a subscription service based in the cloud that allows you to upload, edit and share your clips with a phone or a computer. Just plug in a Hero5 to load and the camera automatically stores pictures and videos on the service. This is something very good for people like me, who tends to leave that microSD cards are filled out and I’m never really sure if I downloaded the footage, which inevitably results in duplicate or accidental deletion.

The service also gives you access to a library of licensed music to use in your clips, a 20 percent discount on frames and related accessories in the site GoPro.com, premium support, and access to exclusive clothing GoPro. OK, maybe this last is not going to seal the deal, but the music is a good advantage.

Editions faster

The cloud service is facing a larger problem that is potentially stalling the sales of the new GoPro cameras: No one wants to edit their videos. To this end, in February, GoPro acquired two editing applications video mobile — Replay, and Splice. The first was re-launched in may as Quik.

The app, which is available for iOS and Android, scans your photos and video clips to find the most exciting and cutting the boring parts. You can cut back even more if you don’t like what you have. You can then add transitions and effects, and synchronize it all to the rhythm of the music that you choose. GoPro has led now to these same features to a desktop version of Quik, if you want to do your work on a larger screen.

in Addition, for those times when you just can’t wait to get the clips from the camera and phone during edition, GoPro will sell Quik Key. Is a microSD card reader in the form of a key fob that connects directly to the phone.

voice Commands

Even with the best software, the editing can still be a drag while you are looking between your shots to find the best moments. GoPro had added an easy tagging with the latest generation of cameras, but this time he is doing it hands free.

With the cameras Hero5, you can use your voice to tag a section and find it quickly after. There are also voice commands to start and stop recordings, take photos and change the shooting modes. The company also plans to have a new remote, called Remo, to expand the scope of the voice commands.
