Rosetta will approach six kilometers from his kite on February 14 – ABC Color

PARIS. Rosetta will approach just six miles from his kite on the 14th, which will carry out a series of measures and scientific observations for a more precise knowledge in particular its atmosphere.

The European Space Agency (ESA) today presented the program of this phase of closest approach to the comet 67P / Churyumov-Gerasimenko , which will occur at 12:41 GMT (9:41 Paraguayan hour) when Rosetta fly over the region called Imhotep.

Matt Taylor , one of the scientists Mission, explained that this will allow to make “unique” observations, particularly high-resolution measurements of the surface at different wavelengths or sample the atmosphere.

The probe is over 26 kilometers of 67P Tuesday and now is moving to within 140 kilometers on Saturday, after which give a new twist to his approach.

Rosetta be placed on the regions most active comet and that should help scientists understand the relationships between the source of observed activity and atmosphere.

It will pay particular attention to the search for areas where gas and dust quickly away from the surface, as well as the evolution of these components at greater distances from the comet.

Rosetta fly over the 67P with the sun directly behind, so that means that they can take pictures without shade. The comet’s surface is very dark and reflects only 6% of the light it receives.

The next August is when it is expected that the comet -at Rosetta accompanied in their trip- reach its closest approach to the sun.
