The rules prevent Internet providers charge more web pages that generate more traffic.

Then year of legal battles, today’s Federal Communications Commission USA (FCC) adopted a set of rules to protect net neutrality in the United States.

The new rules are quite similar to the proposals outlined Obama three months ago.

These rules prioritizing paid is prohibited, ie the providers of internet (ISP) offer a different speed of service to different sites in exchange for money, creating a sort of “fast lane” for cash. The approved proposals also prohibit ISPs from blocking websites and gives the FCC the authority to intervene when these providers do not act in accordance with the public interest.

In essence, the plan allows the FCC to regulate the Internet as a public service, in the same way as with the phones. It is noteworthy that This plan does not give authority to the US government to determine the price of internet service .

However, it is still too early to declare victory. The future of the internet will be in court and possibly in the US Congress and is the largest ISPs are planning to sue the FCC and this is cause for alarm because there is already a negative precedent. At that time, in 2011, Verizon (ISP) won a lawsuit for what a judge ruled the ancient rules of net neutrality FCC.

The expectations of what will happen in the future are varied but what we know for now is that this is good news for those who want to preserve a free internet.
