Found in Australia impact zone of the largest asteroid … – Prensa Latina

March 23, 2015, 14:15 Canberra, Mar 23 (PL) Geophysicists Australia discovered in the area in the world biggest impact, about 400 kilometers in diameter, caused by an asteroid more than 300 million years ago, today reported the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The team led by Dr. Andrew Glikson, National University of Australia, believes that two ancient craters found in the center of the country were caused by a meteorite that broke apart before crashing into the Earth.

According to experts, the impact crater is long gone but left their hidden footprints in the earth’s crust. They seem to be two large structures, each about 200 kilometers in diameter.

The impacted region was found during drilling of more than two kilometers in the crust, as part of a geothermal research in Warburton Basin, near the borders of South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory, said Dr Glikson.

The drill core containing rock debris that had become glass temperature extreme and the pressure caused by the impact, said the scientist.

Each of the two asteroids should be more than 10 kilometers in diameter, which would of course then the end for many species, he said.

According to the researcher, the exact date of the newfound impact is still unclear, because the rocks are around 300 to 600 million years.
