Images of the ‘scars’ ESA Mars

Madrid. (EP). – The European Space Agency (ESA , for its acronym in English) has published new images, with a level of detail unprecedented taken by the Mars Express in their mission to Mars . The eight images portray the throat of Hebes Chasma and chain guns that surround it, “a scar on the past of the Red Planet”, as reported by the agency.

ESA explained that this type of training is not found in any other barrel of Mars, and their origins are not entirely clear. Its layers are volcanic materials and windblown dust and sediments deposited by water over time.

Mars Express ESA has flown over this region of Mars on multiple occasions. This new mosaic of eight images “shows Hebes Chasma in all its glory, and an unprecedented level of detail.”

Hebes Chasma is a closed throat nearly 8 kilometers deep, stretching 315 kilometers from east to west and 125 kilometers from north to south at its widest point. It is located about 300 kilometers north of the large complex of canyons of Valles Marineris.

The origins of Hebes Chasma and surrounding canyons are linked to the nearby Tharsis volcanic region, where the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons

As the Tharsis bulge was filling with magma during the first billion years of the history of Mars, the crust is stretched in its vicinity, leading to fracture and collapse into gigantic throats like Hebes Chasma. Around the deep depression can be distinguished intricate patterns of failure
