itemprop=”author”> Physicists Belgian François Englert and British Peter Higgs today won the Nobel Prize in Physics 2013 for having postulated the existence of the subatomic particle known as the Higgs boson, announced the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
In its ruling the institution argued that both receive the award for “his theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of subatomic particles with mass.”
The Royal Academy of Sciences explained that a team of physicists theoretically postulated the existence of this mechanism in 1964 and that “has recently been confirmed by the discovery of fundamental particles predicted” in experiments European Center for Particle Physics (CERN).
Englert and Higgs
this year received the Prince of Asturias Award Research . Englert was born in 1932 and holds the Free University of Brussels, while Higgs was born in 1929 and holds the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom).
this award announcement was marked by the unusual delay of the act , which was initially called to 0945 GMT and that only a few moments before that time will be postponed without giving reasons, to first 30 minutes and finally 60.
The winners of this prize of eight million kronor (922,000 euros, or $ 1.3 million) , the same amount as last year but 20% less than in 2011 , are on the payroll of the French Nobel Physics Serge Haroche and American David J. Wineland, who won the award in the last edition.
Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences granted this award in 2012 for his work on the interaction between light and matter. This edition of the Nobel began yesterday with the award of U.S. scientists Medicine James E. Rothman and Randy W. Schekman and German Thomas C. Südhof to discover “the machinery that regulates vesicular trafficking, transport system essential in our cells.”
Tomorrow we will announce the names of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and Thursday and Friday, the one who wins the Literature and Peace, respectively, to conclude on Monday, with the announcement of Economy.
Nobel delivery will take place, according to tradition, two parallel ceremonies on December 10, in Oslo for the Peace and in Stockholm the other, coinciding with the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel.
