Between May and June, the “possible awakening” of Philae module – MDZol

The European Space Agency hopes to wake the device that is in the comet 67 / P Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

The European Space Agency (ESA) relies on a “may wake up” between May and June of Philae module, the first artifact run by humans who managed to land on a comet, after separating from the mother probe Rosetta.

“We hope to awaken, but nobody can will guarantee it, “he told a press conference at the headquarters of Darmstadt (Germany) Director of Space Navigation Manned and missions of ESA, Thomas Reiter.

The key will be the temperature of Philae exceeds 0 degrees Celsius when the comet where it is approaching the sun, which allow the batteries start charging module solar energy.

Philae landed on the comet 67 / P Churyumov-Gerasimenko last November 12 after three landings and two rebounds, which did not fall into the set point and to stay in a dark, rocky area without the necessary light right now to charge the batteries and work autonomously.

On November 15, 57 hours after the historic landing, went into hibernation, but before he was able to send to Earth information from their early experiments.

Currently, Reiter said, the probe Rosetta mother is 29 kilometers from the comet and is expected to be close in February six kilometers from the comet’s surface and send images of the same.

Scientists ESA still studying the information received deRosetta and Philae, a mission which should be completed in late 2015 but Reiter hoped to extend it another year.

It depends assumed, the results obtained in science and that a budget increase is achieved work.

The Rosetta and Philae module were recognized by the scientific journals Science and Nature as one of the ten discoveries of 2014.
