ESCOCIA.- In a study published in Science Express, the team of researchers from the Universities of Glasgow and Heriot-Watt describes in detail how they made to decrease the speed of light and cause to be maintained in space vacuum.
To achieve this, applied a “mask” to-the individual particles of light-photons giving a spatial structure to reduce its speed.
Jacquiline Romero, Daniel Giovanni and colleagues at the University of Glasgow built a kind of racetrack for photons. There, they were run in pairs the same distance to a given goal. A photon traveled in its normal state and the other was reconfigured with a mask.
This mask forced the photon to change its shape and traveling slower than the speed of light. The researchers compared the arrival times of the two photons and noted that the photon transformed came second. Not for much-a few millionths of a meter, but this showed that the photon traveling more slowly in the empty space.
“The Mask creates a pattern in the beam, and show that this is making it slower, “explains Miles Padgett, University of Glasgow.
” But once this pattern has been imposed (on the photon), even now that the light is not within mask and propagates through empty space, the speed is still slow, “says Padgett.
