On Sunday, Martian rover Opportunity NASA will hold its eleventh anniversary on the Red Planet. To mark the occasion, as only one rover Mars, Opportunity will use a Pancam (a sophisticated term for naming his panoramic camera) to capture the wide view from the top of Cape Tribulation, a part of Endeavour Crater shore and is located at a height of 440 feet. That amounts to 80 percent of the height of the Washington Monument, NASA said.

The picture was captured on January 6 and published on Thursday by NASA. The rover is now at the highest point since leaving Victoria Crater region in 2008.

It was assumed that the original mission of Opportunity on Mars would last only three months, the NASA team feels pretty good to get enough juice to robotcito for over 10 years. “At its core mission and for more than 10 years extra performance in extended missions, Opportunity has provided convincing evidence wet environments on ancient Mars,” NASA said in a statement on the anniversary.

If you look at the part right of the picture closely, you’ll see the American flag, which came under photography Opportunity extended thanks to its robotic arm. “The flag is printed on the cable shield of aluminum in the Rock Abrasion Tool, which is used to cut and brush the surface of a rock to look inside rock material,” NASA said.

The flag is a tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The aluminum which is printed comes from the ruins of the Twin Towers. “Workers of Honeybee Robotics in Manhattan, which is less than a mile from the Twin Towers were putting together the tools for rock abrasion to the rover Opportunity and Spirit in September 2001 “the agency said.

Opportunity has traveled more than 25.8 miles from the start of his career on Mars on January 25, 2004. Now take due south along the edge of Endeavour towards a region called Valley Marathon – a place where minerals have been discovered related to the presence of water. “The informal name of this place comes from the calculations project that Opportunity will need to complete the distance of a marathon (26.2 miles or 42.2 kilometers) when the rover reach your goal” of According to the website of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL, for its acronym in English).

The small rover is currently experiencing a problem with the storage memory. NASA scientists have developed a solution for now and are working on a “software solution to restore its functionality.”
